Walk into any supplement store — or scroll any supplement brand's site — and the same implicit message comes through every label: more is better.
More ingredients. More capsules. More protocols. More "synergistic blends." More things to remember, to buy, to track.
There's a structural reason for this. Complexity justifies premium pricing. A 14-ingredient formula sounds more sophisticated than a 4-ingredient one, even when nine of those ingredients are dosed too low to do anything measurable. And a routine that requires multiple products creates more reasons to come back next month.
For most people, the supplements that actually matter fit in one hand. And the ones with the strongest evidence behind them tend to be the least glamorous on the label.
The problem with most stacks
Underdosing. Many multi-ingredient formulas include every trendy compound on the front of the bottle, but at doses too small to produce a measurable effect. The supplement industry calls this fairy dusting — the ingredient is technically present, but it's functionally decorative. It serves the marketing, not the body.
Proprietary blends. When a label reads "Proprietary Blend: 2,340 mg" followed by seven ingredients, you have no way to know how much of any single ingredient you're getting. Brands aren't required to disclose individual amounts inside a blend. That isn't a loophole. It's the point.
If a brand won't tell you exactly what's in each serving, that's the answer.
Complexity as retention. A complicated routine creates dependence on the brand's full ecosystem. Five products mean five repeat purchases. Simple, effective products are paradoxically harder businesses to build — which is part of why most brands don't build them.
Decision fatigue. Every supplement in a stack is a daily decision. Did I take it? Do I have enough? Pre-workout or with food? What if I missed yesterday? That cognitive load is one of the main reasons supplement routines quietly fall apart.
What the evidence actually supports
The supplements with the strongest, most consistent evidence behind them are unglamorous on purpose. They support core physiological systems.
Creatine monohydrate has one of the largest evidence bases of any nutritional supplement. Decades of randomized controlled trials and the International Society of Sports Nutrition's 2017 position stand confirm meaningful, consistent effects on strength, power, and high-intensity exercise capacity — and a strong safety profile across thousands of trials.1
Electrolytes — sodium, potassium, chloride, magnesium — govern fluid balance at the cellular level. Sodium and potassium work together via the sodium-potassium pump to maintain cellular function and hydration. Without them, drinking water alone is incomplete.2
Magnesium is the fourth most abundant cation in the human body and a cofactor in hundreds of enzymatic reactions, including ATP production, muscle contraction, protein synthesis, and sleep regulation. A 2025 review in Nutrients confirms that magnesium inadequacy remains common worldwide — driven by inadequate dietary intake, chronic disease, medication use, and lifestyle factors — and is associated with fatigue, poor sleep, and impaired muscle function.3
Vitamin D3 with K2 work together mechanistically: D3 supports calcium absorption and immune function; K2 helps direct calcium toward bones and away from soft tissue. The synergy between them is well-documented biochemically, and a growing body of evidence suggests the two are best taken together rather than apart — though the clinical trial picture is still being built out.4
These aren't trendy. They're foundational — the inputs that support core systems and that meaningful portions of the population are either deficient in or not getting reliably from diet.
The body runs on systems, not ingredients
Here's the framing shift most supplement brands miss: the body doesn't process ingredients in isolation. It runs on interconnected systems.
Energy production, hydration, and muscle function aren't three separate problems requiring three separate products. They're one system with overlapping inputs.
Creatine supports cellular energy by helping regenerate ATP. Electrolytes maintain the fluid environment those reactions need to happen in. Magnesium is a cofactor in the enzymatic processes that produce ATP in the first place. D3 and K keep the structural and immune scaffolding around all of that functional.
The goal isn't to optimize individual ingredients. It's to support the system those ingredients serve.
A short list of well-dosed inputs working together is almost always more effective than a long list of fractionally dosed inputs working separately.
Simplicity is a feature
There's a version of the supplement conversation that treats simplicity as settling — that if you're not taking twelve things, you're not serious about your health. That's backwards.
Simplicity is the mechanism through which consistency becomes possible. A routine simple enough to do every day without thinking is more valuable than an optimal protocol you abandon after six weeks. The research on creatine, magnesium, and most foundational nutrients shows effects that accumulate over weeks of consistent use. Their value isn't in any single dose — it's in the daily maintenance.
A complicated routine done three days a week produces less of that effect than a simple one done every day.
What to look for
If you only remember three things when evaluating a supplement, make it these:
Read the Supplement Facts panel, not the front of the bottle. The Facts panel tells you the actual amount per serving. If a "blend" lists a combined weight rather than individual amounts, you can't tell what you're getting. That's by design.
Check the form and the dose, not just the name. "Magnesium" alone doesn't tell you whether it's oxide (poorly absorbed) or glycinate (well absorbed). "Vitamin D" doesn't tell you D2 vs. D3. Read the parenthetical.
Fewer is usually better. A short label with the right forms at meaningful doses will almost always outperform a long one full of fractions.
The bottom line
If you're taking a complicated stack and it's working for you, keep going. But if you've found yourself spending more than you'd like, overthinking more than you'd like, or quietly abandoning supplement routines because they're too much effort to maintain — it might be worth asking whether the complexity is serving you, or serving the brand selling it to you.
The supplements that matter are the ones you take. Every day. Without drama.
